The University of Nairobi held its Annual Tree-Planting Exercise at the Upper Kabete Campus on April 11, 2025, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and the national agenda on climate action.
The occasion was graced by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Margaret Hutchinson, who led the tree-planting initiative alongside top university leadership. Present at the event were the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Prof Ayub Gitau; the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research, Innovation and Enterprise, Prof Francis Mulaa; and the Chief Operations Officer and Director of University Advancement, Mr. Brian Ouma.

They provide us with oxygen, improve air quality, and are vital in combating climate change. As the University of Nairobi, we have a responsibility to lead by example in the preservation and enhancement of our natural environment. Each tree we plant today is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and ecological stewardship,” he stated.
In her address, Prof Hutchinson expressed gratitude to the university’s partners for their unwavering support in advancing the presidential directive on tree planting under the framework of National Cohesion and Values. She emphasised the importance of collective action in safeguarding the environment and nurturing future generations.
“We are proud to be part of the national call to restore our ecosystems. This tree-planting exercise is not just a symbol of our commitment to sustainability but also a step towards fulfilling our responsibility as a leading academic institution,” she said.
Also in attendance were Deans and Directors of various faculties, students, staff and partners, all of whom actively participated in the day’s activities. The event fostered unity and environmental awareness across the university community.
