The Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), a strategic partnership among the African Development Bank, the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), and the University of Nairobi, concluded a transformative session at the second Changemakers School in the Netherlands. From October 14-18, Campus Fryslân at the University of Groningen hosted a diverse cohort of climate adaptation advocates from around the world, offering them an immersive experience designed to develop skills, exchange knowledge, and inspire innovative climate solutions.
The Changemakers School’s curriculum emphasized hands-on training in climate adaptation, covering critical aspects of project development, implementation, and evaluation in response to contemporary environmental challenges. Through this, participants were empowered to emerge as leaders prepared to build resilient, sustainable infrastructures.
Field Visits Showcase Nature-Based Solutions
Participants explored the cutting-edge climate adaptation methods used along the North Dutch coast through immersive field visits to sites such as the Wetterskip Fryslân water management district, Typha Fields, MuzeeAquarium Delfzijl, the Marconi Site, and the Double Dike system. These excursions showcased nature-based solutions that marry ecological preservation with robust, adaptive infrastructure, providing practical models for climate resilience in Africa and beyond.
Prof. Patrick Verkooijen’s Keynote on Climate Finance
A keynote by Prof. Patrick Verkooijen, the Ban Ki Moon Chair on Climate Adaptation, CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation, and Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, focused on “Bridging the Finance Gap: Climate Adaptation in a Multipolar World.” Prof. Verkooijen addressed the need for innovative financial solutions to drive climate adaptation, particularly for regions at high risk of climate shocks. He urged strategic alignment of global resources to make climate adaptation financing more accessible and equitable.
Launch of Dual Doctorate in Climate Adaptation Governance
In a significant announcement, Prof. Verkooijen introduced a new dual doctorate program in Climate Adaptation Governance, established in partnership between the University of Nairobi and the University of Groningen. This pioneering program is set to cultivate leaders who can bridge the gap between research and policy, creating impactful frameworks for climate adaptation governance.
The Changemakers School brought together climate leaders united by a shared commitment to address one of the most critical issues of our time. Participants not only honed practical skills but also formed a global network of experts and advocates, laying a foundation for ongoing collaboration. This program demonstrated the potential of international partnerships in fostering innovative solutions to the complex challenge of climate change.
