The University of Nairobi has concluded a four-day Grant Writing and Mentorship Workshop held from 3rd to 6th February 2026, organized in collaboration between the Directorate of University Advancement & Institutional Development and the Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) Division. The workshop aimed at strengthening institutional research capacity by equipping participants with practical skills in proposal development and research management.
The training began with a review of doctoral research practices at the University of Nairobi, bringing together key stakeholders for in-depth deliberations. Participants included Deans and Associate Deans from the University’s ten faculties, Chairs of Departments, PhD supervisors, and PhD students. These discussions provided a critical reflection on the doctoral research landscape and explored strategies for improving supervision, access to scholarships, and competitiveness in securing research grants.
The subsequent three days focused on grant proposal development and mentorship, targeting early-career researchers, PhD students, and academic and non-academic staff. Sessions emphasized practical approaches to developing competitive grant proposals and effectively implementing funded projects.
The training sessions featured senior researchers who shared practical insights on navigating the research ecosystem and successfully securing research funding. Key areas covered included doctoral supervision and research ethics approval processes; financial planning and management of grants; building strong personal and institutional research profiles, leveraging ICT and AI tools for research, library and journal access services, and strategies for identifying funding opportunities and writing competitive grant proposals.
The workshop was organized under the University of Nairobi Afretec Network, Knowledge Pillar in partnership with the Research, Innovation and Enterprise Division. The opening ceremony was graced by the Vice Chancellor (Ag), Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof. Ayub Gitau, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Enterprise, Prof. Leonidah Kerubo, Director of University Advancement & Institutional Development, Prof. George Abong’ and Director of Research, Prof. Thomas Ochuku.
Over 100 participants were trained, reinforcing the University’s commitment to building a strong, competitive, and sustainable research ecosystem.
