The University of Nairobi has been ranked best university in the country and in the East and Central Africa Region for more than 5 years in row in the just released Webometrics Ranking. The Ranking Web of Universities (Webometrics) has released the July 2021 edition of the Webometrics report placing the University of Nairobi position 1 in Kenya, 13 in Africa and 1054 in the world. The Webometrics ranking covers more than 31,000 institutions of higher learning across the globe; this ranking places the University of Nairobi among the top 5% best Universities in the world.
The University of Nairobi has ranked very well in the 3 major parameters set by the ranking body namely; visibility, Transparency (openness) and Excellence (Scholar). The Visibility parameter which accounts for 50% of the total score, shows the number of external links pointing to the University webpages. In this indicator, UoN ranked position 1220 in the world, 9 in Africa and position 2 in Kenya.
The Transparency parameter allocated 10% of total score which accounts for the most cited researchers on the Google Scholar platform. The July ranking placed the University of Nairobi position 757 in the world, 9 in Africa and position 1 in Kenya.
The Excellence Parameter covers 40% of the Score and takes into account the top most cited papers published in 2015-2019. In this ranking, the University was placed position 1632 in the world, 47 in Africa and position 1 in Kenya.

About webometrics
Since 2004, the Ranking Web (or Webometrics Ranking) is published twice a year in January and July.
Webometrics ranking of world universities are an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigations Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain. CSIC is attached to the Ministry of Education and its main objective is to promote scientific research and improve progress of the scientific and technological level of the country which will contribute to increase the welfare of the citizens, it also promote open access to the knowledge generated by the University.
