African School on Climate Change and Adaptation (2nd Edition)

Participants of the 2nd edition of the African Summer School on Climate Change

The University of Nairobi, through the Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation (ICCA), successfully hosted the second edition of the African School on Climate Change and Adaptation from June 30 to July 11, 2025. The two-week program brought together 27 participants from Kenya, across Africa, and international universities, fostering interdisciplinary learning on climate resilience, sustainability, and adaptation.

Building on the momentum of the inaugural 2024 edition, this year’s program featured a broader curriculum targeting early-career professionals, graduate students, and emerging researchers committed to climate action. Participants engaged in expert-led lectures, interactive modules, field visits, and collaborative projects.

Key highlights included:

  • Sessions on nature-based solutions and adaptation pathways
  • Climate Fresk simulations linking science to real-world responses
  • Group projects co-designing community-based adaptation strategies
  • Expert talks including Dr. Judith Mulwa
  • A Corporate Forum with speakers from TotalEnergies, Schneider Electric, GDC, and Bamburi Cement
  • Field visits to UN Headquarters, Kenya Space Agency, and IGAD Climate Center
  • Lab tours at UoN’s Chiromo Campus covering geochemistry, seismology, and climate labs

The event was graced by Prof. Raphael Mulaa, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Enterprise (DVC RIE), who reaffirmed the University’s commitment to advancing climate knowledge and action.

With strong institutional and corporate support, the program blended academic depth with practical exposure. The third edition is scheduled for July 6–17, 2026, with applications opening early 2026 through ICCA.
