The Engineering and Science Complex (ESC) Innovation Pillar advanced a landmark step in strengthening innovation at the University of Nairobi through a three-day workshop held from 22nd to 24th September, 2025, in Naivasha. The workshop focused on developing an Innovation Business Model to guide the Innovation Community of Excellence (CoE) operations and shape the business approach of all other ESC CoEs.
Led by members from the Faculty of Business, the sessions brought together the DVC (Finance, Planning and Development), Prof Jackson Maalu, who is also Head of the Innovation Pillar, the Director of University Advancement, Prof George Abong, the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Prof Leonidah Kerubo and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof Syphila Mumenya, alongside Innovation Pillar members. The exercise underscored the importance of structured research and innovation approaches that enable sustainability, scalability, and impact from research-driven innovations.
In their opening remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Science & Technology, together with the Director, University Advancement, emphasised that the model must be practical, inclusive and sustainable, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, genuine industry linkages and an environment where students, faculty, and innovators can co-create solutions.
By the close of the workshop, participants had produced a blueprint that positions the ESC as a hub for entrepreneurial thinking and real-world impact. The Innovation Business Model will ensure that innovations emerging from engineering and science not only advance knowledge but also translate into enterprises and solutions that drive Kenya’s development and global competitiveness.
