The University of Nairobi, through the Engineering and Science Complex (ESC) Company Series Program, successfully conducted an industry learning visit to the Olkaria I Additional Unit (AU) Geothermal Power Station, hosted by Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen). The visit involved 40 Company Series students from the Faculties of Engineering and Science & Technology, accompanied by university staff, for an immersive industry experience.
The educational tour aimed to strengthen the connection between academic training and practical industry exposure. During the visit, students gained firsthand insight into geothermal power generation, one of Kenya’s leading renewable energy sources. KenGen’s expert engineers guided participants through the complete energy production cycle, from geothermal resource extraction and steam management to electricity generation and distribution, providing practical perspectives that complement classroom learning.
Interactive discussions allowed students to engage directly with professionals, ask technical questions, and better understand real-world engineering operations, sustainability practices and challenges within the energy sector. The experience enhanced students’ appreciation of innovation, operational efficiency and the critical role renewable energy plays in national development.
