The University of Nairobi’s Engineering and Science Complex (ESC) Research Pillar is currently holding a strategic meeting in Naivasha from 15th to 18th September 2025 to shape the establishment of a Computing and Artificial Intelligence Community of Excellence (CoE).

The planned CoE, with a budget of €750,000, is envisioned as a hub for advanced research, innovation, and training in computing and AI. Discussions are bringing together the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE), deans, senior researchers, and members of the Computing Department to co-develop a detailed implementation plan.

Key areas under consideration include infrastructure specifications, computing power requirements, interim hosting options, and refurbishment needs such as furniture, staffing, and governance structures. Participants are also deliberating on funding strategies, partnerships, and human resource frameworks that will be essential for running the centre effectively.

This ongoing engagement reflects the University of Nairobi’s commitment to positioning itself as a regional leader in computing and AI.
