On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, the French Development Agency (AFD) paid a courtesy call to Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama during their two-day education mission at the University of Nairobi. The primary focus of the visit was the forthcoming Engineering and Science Complex, a significant project born from a joint initiative between the Kenyan and French governments and ratified at the presidential level.
During the meeting, AFD provided an update on the progress of the project to the Vice Chancellor. The construction of the complex represents a major step forward in enhancing the university’s infrastructure and academic capabilities in engineering and science disciplines.
AFD’s Regional Deputy Director, Anthea Manasseh, highlighted the agency’s commitment to this project, noting that while AFD has extensive experience in the energy and infrastructure sectors, this venture into education marks a significant and exciting first for the organization.
In his remarks, Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama emphasised the need for rigorous oversight and collaboration in the project’s execution. “A committee should be formed comprising representatives from the University of Nairobi, AFD, and the Ministry of Education to ensure due diligence in the disbursement of funds. It is crucial that all accountants work together to maintain transparency and accountability throughout the project,” he stated.
The Engineering and Science Complex is set to become a landmark at the University of Nairobi, symbolizing the strengthened ties between Kenya and France and their shared dedication to advancing higher education and scientific research.
